Pakistan’s First Government Autism School to Offer Free Education and Therapy

In a groundbreaking initiative, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced the establishment of Pakistan’s first government-run autism school in Lahore. This pioneering project aims to alleviate the financial burden on parents of children with autism, offering them free treatment and specialized education.

A Landmark Initiative for Special Education

During a recent meeting, Maryam Nawaz Sharif reiterated her commitment to enhancing special education systems across Punjab, calling children with autism “our special heroes.” The school, currently in its final construction phase, is set to be completed within a record timeframe of one year.

To further strengthen autism care in the province, 10 autism units have been established in various special education institutions across Punjab. The project’s progress will be closely monitored by Special Assistant Sania Ashiq.

Assistive Devices & Infrastructure Development

Punjab’s special education sector is witnessing significant improvements, with 9,206 assistive devices already distributed to special students, including:

  • 7,702 hearing aids
  • 360 wheelchairs
  • 300 walkers
  • 344 crutches
  • 500 white canes

Additionally, 35 special education schools have been upgraded, and an ambitious plan to transform 28 institutions into centers of excellence is currently underway.

Specialized Curriculum and Job Opportunities

A specialized curriculum for students up to grade 5 has been developed, including a translated version of the Holy Quran tailored for hearing-impaired children.

To further empower differently-abled individuals, skill-based courses are being introduced, and a job fair in collaboration with private institutions is in the works. So far:

  • 900 students have been enrolled under these initiatives.
  • 25 students have already secured jobs.
  • 14 students have successfully completed the first batch of the Special Education Vocational Matriculation program.

Technological Advancements in Special Education

To modernize special education, Punjab is implementing a School Information System and a smart monitoring app. Furthermore, 586 students from special education centers have transitioned into regular schools, ensuring better integration into mainstream education.

Sports and Wellness Initiatives

In a bid to promote physical activity and inclusivity, Punjab is gearing up to host its first grand sports gala for special students. Alongside this initiative:

  • Eight new special school buildings have been completed.
  • Approval has been granted for the construction of nine more schools.
  • A screening tool for slow learners has been introduced to cater to their specific needs.
